Work Experience

Teaching Assistant

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

2013 - present

I was a Teaching Assistant for Latin 101, Latin 104, and Classical Mythology discussion sections. Latin 101 was an introductory course designed to hone students' basic knowledge of the Latin language and grammar in order to read Classical Latin. Latin 104 was an advanced course in which students read authentic Latin poetry and discussed it throughout the semester. In both Latin courses, I was the instructor, and organized the entire class, including daily lectures, individual and group assignments, weekly exposure to culture, and exams. In the mythology sections, I led weekly discussion over a work of Classical literature with approximately 30 students. In addition to fostering thoughtful discussion and analysis of the ideas in these texts, I encouraged students to understand a culture much different than their own. Outside of class, I set up a monthly Classics Movie Night where students would watch and discuss movies and television shows concerning Rome with eachother and Graduates students.

Instructor for Latin After School Club

Carrie Busey Elementary School

Fall 2015

I designed and instructed an after school club designed to introduce students from 2nd to 5th grade to Latin and Roman culture. Once a week for seven weeks, I met with ten students. Each week we read a myth from Ovid's Metamophoses in adapted Latin, and then an aspect of Roman culture, such as art, government, or entertainment. Students would either play a game or make a craft to cement their understandings. Some activities include making a Latin comic of a myth, playing conspiratio (a version of the game mafia), and making a protective amulet called a bulla.

Instructor for "Meet the Romans" Camp

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Summer 2015

I designed a week long camp to introduce children (ages 8-12) to ancient Roman civilization. Through engaging activities, campers actively learned about Roman history and culture. Some activities included designing a shield, constructing an edible model of a Roman road, performing myths, and even handling authentic Roman coins. In addition, campers were introduced to the Latin language through reading popular Roman stories.

Grader for Greek 101

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Fall 2014

I was responsible for grading weekly assignments from the introductory Greek course. I gave clear, thorough, and constructive feedback to students, in order to help them understand their mistakes and improve. Assignments were submitted through the university's Blackboard system, requiring me to be familiar with multiple word processing programs.

Tutor

Xavier University in Cincinnati
Learning Assistance Center

2012 - 2013

I coached students who were struggling in Latin and philosophy courses through one-on-one sessions that were designed to boost students' confidence and teach them how to succeed on their own in class. For Latin students, I explained grammatical concepts and developed techniques to study that fit their individual learning styles. For philosophy students, I mentored students in understanding and articulating advanced philosophical thoughts from texts.

Camp Counselor, Club Scientific Bluegrass
The Curious Edge inLexington, KY

2011 - 2012 (Summers)

I facilitated and instructed various classes of approximately 30 children (ages 6-14) in courses on astrology, paleontology, video game making, special effects makeup, and claymation movies. I prepared and guided children in various experiments to demonstrate scientific concepts. These courses ultimately culminated in projects that applied these concepts such as claymation movies and personally designed video games.
